Some things you need to make sure to do are: Get the correct resistors for your leds, create a blunt contact point (instead of a sharp needle tip), and also make sure the 12v line isn't touching any grounding points (such as the back of the case). Every part of my design is made to be simple and effective. If you follow all the steps you should be able to create a smooth and silent rotating fan.
The only drawbacks are adjusting the single contact to make a strong and silent connection. If the contact isn't properly adjusted there will most definatly be a scraping noise. Adding motor oil as a lubricant helps the surface tension.
The signal contact fan is a fairly simple and cheap modification. With only a few materials and tools you can turn any fan into a stylish and unique fan. The actual costs for the modification were only $1.51 USD (Fan, leds, and the penny). The fan I used had leds built onto it,onclick="window.open(this.href); but of course its original looks were far from acceptable.
If you plan to follow this guide, be creative and do other wild things to make your fans more unique. Maybe red and blue leds, or fading on and off. Don't let the warrenty scare away your limits to create extreme modifications.
